PPC advertising is a constantly changing landscape and when you combine years of experience with data driven analysis then the results can be outstanding. Historically, it is a simple keyword-based way of targeting customers in search engines, such as Google, with a text ad. It has developed into something with many layers: retargeting, device targeting and ad extensions to name a few. It is understandable why people can see it as a “dark art”, much of the confusion is simply down to the amount of acronyms and terms referred to:

  • PPC (pay-per-click) – the original name and abbreviation. You pay for how many times a user clicks your ad.
  • PPC (pay-per-call) – you pay every time someone calls your number directly from an ad on a smartphone.
  • Search – this is the newest name for PPC and reflects how much paid search has changed. You no longer simply have to pay-per-click, you can pay-per-acquisition (only pay whenever you get a sale).
  • Paid Search ads – this is just another name for PPC.
  • CPC (cost-per-click) – this is one of the key metrics in paid search; it is the cost incurred every time a user clicks on one of your paid ads.
  • CPM (cost-per-thousand impressions) – the most popular form of billing is CPC based, however, you can also use a CPM model. This is the cost incurred whenever your paid ad has been “viewed” 1000 times.

The most popular platform for PPC is Google Ads (formerly Google AdWords), but there is also Bing Ads (developed by Microsoft) which covers approximately 20% of the UK search engine market.
